I just received an e-mail from Carol Lambert As the Editor, I receive quite a bit of mail concerning articles in the Bytes. Carol needed some help with a program called “Family Heritage” and had read an article on it by O.T. Stoll from the May 1998 Product Review in the Orange Bytes. The problem is that the contact information is no longer current. This was going to take some searching. Using tactics suggested by Terry Currier in his four part series on Search Engines, I used a search engine named “Google” to find more about the genealogy of IMSI Family Heritage. Did you know that if you put in the words “IMSI Family Heritage” into “Google Search” at Google.com that the first listing is O.T.’s article
I found out from O.T.’s article that someone called Neologic Systems Inc. had developed the program. It was copyrighted by Corel and called Corel Family Tree Suite. IMSI acquired it and called it Family Heritage. This was as far as we went with the article from 1998. The contact information in the article was for IMSI. Continuing looking, I found that a company called Mindscape had owned this program, which they named Family Tree Creator. If you go to Mindscape’s website you find that they are now part of The Learning Company http://www.learningco.com. Their web store is called Learningco.com. Learning Company was part of Mattel, but is now part of GTG (Gores Technology Group) and, according to their publicity; they are the worlds second largest software company, with Microsoft being the largest company.
Learningco has many software titles, some with familiar names, from many companies. They have Family Tree Maker which is our old friend Family Heritage aka (also known as) Corel Family Tree Suite.
Programs change quickly and familiar programs get lost. Using tools found in the Bytes you can do your own digging and maybe you will find an old friend with a new name still alive on the web.
