WHAT CAN YOU DO to prepare for the rotating power outages that are likely to happen this summer? In reality, not much. But here are some tips that might be helpful.1. Back your work up frequently.
2. Don’t leave your computer on unattended.
3. If power goes out, unplug your computer. Don’t turn it back on until after power is restored.
4. A battery backup device can give you 10-15 minutes backup time and can be bought for less than $100.
It is virtually impossible to get a warning that power to your area will be cutoff. Some of the power utilities will tell you what areas are likely to be next on the list, but first you need to know your Block number. These will probably start appearing on your electric bills soon, if not listed now. But remember that there are no assurances that your area won’t be affected, as it depends on the magnitude of the power cut required. Here are some handy web sites that you might want to add to your Favorites list.
California Independent System Operator (CAISO) www.caiso.com. Check out the System Conditions page for current conditions and the Power Watch page for the formal announcements of Alerts. But you must go to the utility that serves your area for blackout information. Southern California Edison (SCE) www.sce.com.
Go to the Regulatory Info Center, then the Rotating Electric Outages menu item for current conditions. Unfortunately they won’t tell you who is next on the list in the event of rotating blackouts.
