Randy Whittle returned to present information about CD labeling and show the program he represents, CD Labeler by Micro Vision Development. In 1991 CD Writers cost about $25,000 and had approximately a 30% success rated . Today, a CD writer is about $150.00 and the success rate is 90%.
The advantages of using a CD-ROM are:
• Easy to share data.
• Transfer LP records to music CD’s.
• Archive old data (the estimated life of a CD is 75 to 200 years)
• Save/share digital photos and video.
The CD-R disk has a dye layer on top that is burned from the bottom by the laser in the CD writer, and is more vulner-able to damage than the laser burned side. On a non-labeled disk feel for the stacking hub. A ridge near the center of the disk is on the laser burning side.
The typical CD-R disk can hold either 74 minutes of audio/650Mb of data or 80 minutes of audio/700Mb of data. A new larger disk has been recently introduced that will hold 900Mb of data. The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) for a typical CD-R drive is 100,000 hours, compared to 300,000 hours for the typical read only CD ROM drive. It was suggested that a CD-R drive could last longer if it was an external drive that you could turn off when not needed. Writing to a CD-R disk is fairly straightforward, but you have to write at the speed of the media you are using. Less expensive media may require a slower write speed. Check with your software about setting the speed. How do you tell what is on these new CDs? The ink from z mdfking pen may damage the dye layer of the disk. The best way to safely identify the new CD is with a prinmted label.. Micro Vision Development has been in business for 10 years and license modified versions of their label-making program to Avery and other companies. The three steps to making a label are design, print and application. CD Labeler has several background designs and clipart to help in the design of the label or copy the label on the original CD.with a scanner Micro Vision Development also has a program for creating labels for business card style CD’s. After the presentation, Randy raffled off several prizes he had brought and made a very special offer to club members on the programs he presented. Next month—Steve Gibson, noted author and Computer Guru on Internet Security & new “LeakTest” author, (www.grc.com) Will give us an update on Internet Security and Privacy, and also show his mid-December release of the “LeakTest” freeware, which penetrated all but ONE personal PC firewall and has forced EVERY personal firewall vendor to immediately update and revise their products.?
