Office Suites

Last month we left with many questions to be answered. I decided against addressing the subject of automatic transmission of given e-mails on a timely basis. To solve this problem would most probably require the addition of a Visual Basic Application to Outlook. There is no Macro recorder in Outlook as there is in Word and Excel. Any macros would be written from scratch. Discussion of VBA develop-ment in this SIG would most probably be beyond the interest of most of the members of the SIG.

One member asked about adding an ATTN: bloc to the lower left corner of an envelope. I demonstrated that the simplest way to do this is to add a one-celled table and position it to that corner. As with the Address cell, which was reviewed in a previous meeting, the horizontal position of the cell can be affected by using the guides on the ruler. Its vertical position however, is affected by the number and/or font size of the paragraph marks between the cell and the last line with content. This position scheme is necessary in Word 97. In word 2000, a table can be positioned like any graphic. Grab it and put it anywhere you want.

One member remarked that the United States Post Office is developing stringent requirements as to the placement of address information on the envelope. This was great segue into my next topic. In previous meeting, we had discussed bar-coding the address on the envelope. To address this issue, I pointed out a section 4.0 of U.S. Post Office document C840, which describes the bar-coding standards for letters and flats. The complete document is available at the SIG’s repository on the Internet at www.mydocsonline.com, along with two other glossy USPO documents that describe address position and font type. Come to the meeting for the user ID and password that is necessary to access this web page. Adobe Acrobat is a requirement to reading these documents.

Vic Awdeychuk brought in his procedure to add a logo to the return address of the Envelope wizard in Microsoft Word, and passed out copies to those in attendance. With his help, I went through this procedure. After Vic makes some modifications to his procedure, it will also be made available at mydocsonline.

Next Month—Questions to be answered in April: Lotus commands in Excel
