We had a visitor, Wally, with a new iMac who wants to write books for publication. He was immediately given the advice to double the amount of RAM that came with his machine. His plan is to use Quark Xpress for the layout, which is a good idea, although this is a memory hungry program. Also, photographs will be used for illustra-tions. Photos require lots of memory. Most publishers can handle Quark and it has cross platform capabilities. My own experiences after, uploading a large Quark file to my publisher for editing was to receive a PDF file back for review and corrections.
This worked out well, since Adobe’s Acrobat, the software producing PDF files, retains formatting. Both transfers were accomplished on internet in a matter of minutes each way. Ergo, the second recommendation was to obtain Adobe Acrobat, a free download.
A conflict between Zip drivers and other drivers can sometimes interfere with printing. The solution has been to turn off the Zip drive during the printing session. This information appeared on several Macintosh internet sites, and the foreknowledge became useful when the problem was encountered.
The transfer of applications between an old 7300 computer being retired and an iMac was described. This operation went off smoothly. The iMac is faster, and with its S-video output could be tied directly to the In Focus LCD projector. There are a number of other advantages, including USB outputs. The result is a new core machine, solid in operation, with enhanced capabilities for learning center purposes.
At the main meeting today the IRS presentation was centered on getting citizens to file returns by email. This flies in the face of Intuit’s decision to drop Macintosh from its business income tax programs (and double the price on the so-called Home and Business version that can handle Schedule Cs). No one present had experience with the Kipplinger program for income taxes. However, an initial investigation using Sherlock 2 shows that it provides 1065 forms (for S Corporations, partnerships, LLCs, etc.) as well as 1040 forms. Therefore, a switch to Kipplinger’s Tax Cut Pro may be in the offing next year.
A number of Macintosh presentations are being scheduled for home movie making. An Apple bulletin showed one in Burbank, which is pretty far away for a morning drive. However, there are others in South Orange County. Those who attend might report at the next meeting.
