The topic for the New Technology SIG was Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). The Hardware SIG joined the New Technology SIG in Irvine Hall for the SIG’s single meeting of the day..The electric power industry has been making the news in California for quite some time. We are all concerned abouy Rolling blackouts which are becoming more frequent and common. This summer, there are expected to be close to 300 hours of rolling blackouts. That means almost 300 different regions will suffer a full hour of blackouts.
Uninterruptible power supplies are not long-term solutions, but for very short power failures, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) might be all that is needed to allow you to save your vital data.
UPS units are becoming commodities and you can now buy UPS units in any department store, warehouse club, office supply store, etc. A basic 650 volt-ampere unit sells for a little more than $150 while a full-featured unit costs about $250.
To learn more, you can read my article Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Technology elsewhere in this June 2001 issue of the Orange Bytes.
