Macintosh by John Willner willner@earthlink.net, NOCCCThis is a report on the first meeting at 11:15 AM in Wilkinson 210. While attendance was light (probably due to accidental misinformation on the cover of Orange Bytes and the change in meeting date), it is hoped that no one showed up at 2:30 PM, the former meeting time. By next month we should be able to determine whether or not the membership approves this requested move to an earlier time. The meeting room proved to be very good.
We had two new visitors at this meeting and discussed OS X versus OS 9.1 at some length. Using the LCD projector and G3 laptop computer, operations were demonstrated. There is limited software for OS X at this moment, and no print driver for my Epson 900. However, drivers for other Epson printers are available as well as drivers for several HP printers. However, principles of OS X operation contain many improvements, starting with no extensions. Stability is excellent. Examples of artwork improved with Photoshop 6 were displayed operating in OS X under the OS 9.1 environment.
A number of bulletins from Apple were handed out. Several covered MacWorld New York and new product announcements. Processor speeds are inching up as prices are lowered for earlier top-of-the-line machines. In one bulletin jobs are being offered to knowledgeable Mac users at the new store in Costa Mesa that should open in October.
Sources for USB/Firewire boards were given. The cost is about $115. For people with older computers, these cards greatly expand capabilities. Many USB peripherals are now available. Firewire hard drives are fast and come in large sizes. While you cannot boot up from them, they provide an enormous amount of program and backup storage.
By the next meeting new CD ROMs are expected from Apple that should show exerts from MacWorld New York and specifications for the new computers.
