The topic for the September 7, 2001 New Technology SIG and Hardware SIG was Motherboard Technology 2001. We combined the two SIGs in Irvine Hall.Motherboards are the basis for our computers. Unfortunately, when we decide to upgrade the microprocessor it usually forces us to replace RAM (memory) modules and microprocessor slots.
As a result we must replace the motherboard, but usually we just build a whole new computer. Thankfully that is only ever three or four years. Well, maybe ever two years. That's biannually. Biannually means every two years (biennial), or two times a year (semiannual). That's it! Biannually!
For more information, read my article elsewhere in this November 4, 2001 issue of the North Orange County Computer Club Orange Bytes titled "Motherboard Technology 2001."
Of course, the determining factors for selecting a motherboard are microprocessors and chipsets. As it happens, the topic for the November 2001 Hardware SIG is Microprocessor and Chipset Technology 2001.
