At first our meeting took a small setback when a Chapman University thespian group confiscated our room. This had been accomplished by call Campus Police, who gave it to them without knowing that it had already been scheduled. When they were called again a new temporary meeting room was made available in Roosevelt Hall. We lost a little time, but the room was ideal, and the pulldown screen was large.Last week, upon getting back with Sonnet Technologies Marketing to confirm our meeting with a representative, it turned out that someone else had requested a Sunday presentation ahead of us. The young lady has promised she will come to our October meeting. Sonnet makes a line of very useful upgrade products, and we should have an interest in those that are OS X compatible. They also make USB/Firewire cards.
Announcements were made once again that up to two members of NOCCC, MAC Sig, can represent the club at MacWorld in San Francisco this January. Visitors Chris and Tim Quinn expressed an interest. One or both need to join NOCCC in order to fulfill requirements. We discussed some of the advantages, including free passes to exhibits, a Mac User's Group lounge, three free breakfasts put on by Apple, Adobe and Macromedia with many giveaway products. Also, obtaining a press pass had its advantages.
Chris Quinn, being an expert in Photoshop demonstrated some of its capabilities. Using a 400 -Megabyte laptop computer and LCD projector a variety of steps for improving photographs were shown. Lettering on a building was brought out (it happened to be the city hall of San Buenaventura that is quite attractive). Faces of people taken against back lighting were enhanced. The techniques included use of unsharp masks, layers, and graphical adjustment of tonal ranges. Each step was readily observed on the large pulldown screen via the projected images.
One new member brought in his iMac computer. He is trying to perform advanced work in multimedia while learning some of this computer's capabilities. Fortunately, Claire Lemir has become an expert in use of this computer (she teaches a class on it) and has applied to work at one of the new Apple stores. Claire was able to improve his knowledge considerably during our meeting.
Next meeting y'all come, and we should be able to learn what Sonnet has to offer.
