Office Suites

Last month, we had a question about watermarks and how to create them. This month's Office Tip Sheet describes the process in more detail.

We had a short discussion about re-inking systems. I felt the topic was timely following Don Baker's presentation from last month. Actually, the reason for the topic was the ink stained fingers from the night before. I tried to fill the Canon cartridge with the remains from a previous fill.

The ink kept flowing out of the refill hole as if the cartridge was full and making a mess. Then I switched to the Universal inkjet refill kit that I ordered from Kalvins.com. The first thing I noticed is the Syringe filler as opposed to the squeeze bottle of the first brand. The syringe is packed as 2 pieces, making it continent to store. The needle screwed and secured to the syringe. The syringe is used to draw ink from one of the two 25 ml. ink bottles contained in the kit. Filling the cartridge with this system was a breeze. The instruction booklet says that the BC02 cartridge will hold 20 ml of ink. That's enough for 2 and a half fillings.

Now the test. I installed the cartridge and primed the printer. The first test and several others after left large splotches of ink across the page. At one point, ink was flowing under the left edge of the page. Now the fix.

I removed the cartridge and spritzed the print head with Allsop's cabinet cleaner that had been decanting for several years. After dabbing the excess with a paper a towel, I reinstalled the cartridge and reran a test. Voila! Perfect print. Amazing stuff that Allsop!

We talked about the contents to the various Microsoft packaged suites and their contents, while giving a brief description of each module. This lead to a discussion about Excel and Access as database managers and their capabilities. If you need to create a relational database similar to an Invoice, your choice will be Access. Although Excel does have a lookup function and can simulate a relational database, it is easier to use as a flat file processor on a list of names, for example, or a database whose size (number of rows) does not change. You may not have a choice if Access does is not packaged within your Office Suite.

Next month we will do more show and tell on the subject of relational databases and an Access applications such as QuoteWerks. November Meeting: QuoteWerks, an Access application.
