Macintosh

New NOCCC member Christopher Quinn is to be the second representative (with title of ambassador) from this club at MacWorld in San Francisco. ÿÿChris happens to be a consultant and very knowledgeable about Macintosh computers and software. ÿÿHe gave some examples of how Filemaker, together with scripting, ÿis being used in extraordinary ways to provide sophisticated solutions quickly.

The latest OS X was fired up on a Lombard G3 power book that was connected to an LCD projector. ÿÿWe were able to explore a number of changes while asking the question, "How is this feature an improvement over all other operating systems?". ÿWhile inexperience may have limited answers, several conclusions were reached: 1. ÿOnce booted, OS X is rock solid. ÿForcing a hang in one program did not bring the system down, and we were able to switch to other applications with ease. ÿ2. Using Apple furnished disks we were able to demonstrate running two movies simultaneously. ÿÿNow, watching two movies at once may not be the ultimate objective. ÿHowever, it clearly demonstrated speed of processing capabilities. ÿThe first movie ran quite smoothly without flicker. ÿThe second had some hesitations that were attributed to lack of memory. ÿThis computer only had 128 megs installed (about the minimum require), and we can confidently predict much faster operation with more memory. ÿ512 megs with this system will be a real plus (now targeted for Santa's attention). ÿÿÿThat should also improve all OS X operations. 3. ÿListing resources in three different ways definitely adds convenience when doing finds. ÿÿ4. ÿRunning OS 9.2 in classic mode was noticeably better than OS 9.1. ÿThe Trendsetter Hotline Investment program was demonstrated while running OS 9.2 .

One of the Apple's CDs listed the latest group of applications that have been rewritten for OS X and released during the month of November (a two page list). ÿÿIncluded were Microsoft Office 2002, Paint and Canvas. Office is alleged to run better and provide more features than the latest Windows release. ÿThe number of applications running under OS X is still limited, but this intense activity for one month is most encouraging. ÿÿThose with the greatest experience are saying this is the greatest operating system yet encountered, and we must simply face upgrades of our most used applications in order to take full advantage of increased performance. ÿOS X is set up for dual processing, and some of the most significant advances may be made with that class of program (such as Photoshop when it comes).

The January meeting will be the day before travel to MacWorld San Francisco. ÿÿWe may get a demonstration from Chris on his enhancements of applications that use Filemaker.
