C++ for C Programmers 3rd edition

by by Ira Pohl - Reviewed by Lloyd Mizer—NOCCC - July 02, 1999 at 00:08:43:

C++ for C Programmers starts with you as a C programmer and through practical examples, creates a C++ programmer. No prior knowledge of C++ is needed, but you should have a firm knowledge of C. It starts by providing an overview of C++ and the use of C++ as an Object Oriented programming language. It covers Native Data Types, Statements, Functions, Pointers, and Arrays. The middle of the book covers classes, the basis of Object Oriented Programming. The latter chapters give advanced details on inheritance, templates and exceptions.

This edition incorporates the new features of the ANSI C++ standard. Each chapter contains an examination of Java then compares and contrasts it with C/C++. It is used in on-site training courses by the author, and the text is the basis for Web-based training in C++ available at: http://www.digitalthink.com.

The C++ programming language was originally called “C with classes” by its creator Bjarne Stroustrup. His goal was to convert C into a language that supported Object Oriented Programming. The concept of basing the learning of C++ on a language that is already known and used by the student makes the concepts easier to learn and understand. A C programmer does not have to avoid using features of C++ programming until the entire language is mastered. A more productive way to learn C++ is to incorporate features as needed, and leave the more complex features until later. Most valid C programs are valid C++ programs, so it is not necessary that you only use features of C++ in your programs.

Ira Pohl is a professor of computer and information sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has thirty years of experience as a software engineer, and is an internationally recognized authority on C/C++ programming. He is the author of eight books on C++, C, and Java programming.
