Lan Times Guide To Building High Speed Networks

by by Terč Parnell - Review By Tony Viscaino, NOCCC - July 30, 1999 at 14:04:50:

This book is very well written and connected from beginning to end. As an MCSE student, I found that there is much information in this book that is helpful for each system administrator to follow through, or at least consider, before starting expansion of the network. Especially before spending money like crazy trying to make the system work more efficiently and faster. This book tells you why you may actually be hurting yourself by going to a high-speed network.

You first find out where your network is slow, and cure this problem. You may not need the expense and complication of a high-speed network.

There are many good graphics in this book, good information about networks, Internetworks, traffic requirements, and tool requirements. These are important for a good analysis of the system in general. In addition, the presence of so many graphics is a big help for not only the novice but for the experienced technician as well.

The book is very explanatory about so many things on the network, like bandwidth shortage, traffic patterns, packet size, protocols, and inadequate hardware. The book tells how all of these pieces, working in conjunction, affect your system performance for good or bad.

This book is published by Osborne a division of McGraw Hill ISBN 0-07-882200-9 the price is $29.95.
