The authors of this O’Reilly book are officers of Argus Associates, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan- it is an information architecture design firm, which designs very large, complex web sites for corporations such as Dow Chemical and Chrysler. Both authors have masters degrees in Information and Library Studies. In 1993, Louis Rosenfeld founded the Internet research service Argus Clearinghouse http://www.clearinghouse.net an excellent selection of topical guides that are useful to anyone.Information Architecture is described as “not the typical O’Reilly animal book that tells you how to build a Unix firewall machine from a box of toothpicks and an old coffeemaker. The intended reader is someone who has familiarity and experience with web site design. But who needs to organize very large amounts of content into a useful web site where users won’t get lost and where the information can be found easily. It is not intended for a designer of simple web pages.
Ten chapters cover the following topics: What Makes a Web Site Work; Introduction to Information Architecture: Organizing Information; Designing Navigation Systems. Also Labeling Systems; Searching Systems; Research; Conceptual Design; Production and Operations; and Information Architecture in Action, which includes a case study of designing a large-scale web site with many examples. A six-page bibliography completes the book.
