C++ Distilled

by by Ira Pohl—Reviewed by: Lloyd D Mizer, lmizer@juno.com, NOCCC - November 23, 1999 at 22:56:00:

C++ Distilled is a concise, but thorough style guide and reference to the ANSI/ISO C++ program-ming language by Ira Pohl. It is intended for the programmerwho needs to control the C++ program-ming language, but not spend years learning every little detail about it. The ANSI/ISO standard contains information that is needed by compiler programmers, but not by the rest of us. He has taken out the excess and reduced the ANSI/ISO standard into a document that is complete, easy to understand, useful and usable. If you need to get up to speed fast on C++ programming you will find this an excellent addition to your library.

I recommend C++ Distilled to all C++ program-mers. It is not the Annotated Reference Manual (ARM), which is designed to examine every syntax peculiarity. It describes the language as it exists, with a focus on the features that are used every day, including tips on style and usage. The tips at the end of the sections and chapters, called Dr. P’s Prescriptions, are brief, straightforward, and include the reasoning behind the recommendations. The Prescriptions and the associated discussions are very good.

C++ Distilled contains more details in its 202 pages than most books containing twice that number. It is difficult to remove excess material without cutting out crucial details but this book does it. It covers all the newest features of C++. Dr. Pohl has presented abstract and difficult concepts in a short and easy to understand manner.

This book was published in 1997; Dr. Pohl included all of the new features in the ANSI/ISA draft standard on the date of publication. He starts with a discussion of Program Structure, Lexical Elements, Constants, Declarations and Scope Rules, and Linkage Rules. Then he covers Types, Conversion Rules and Casts, Expressions and Operators, Statements, Functions, Classes, Inheritance, Templates, Exceptions, Input and Output, Standard Template Library, and the String Library. He includes chapters on Caution and Compatibility and New Features in C++. There is also a Reference and an Index.

Ira Pohl is a professor of computer and informa-tion sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has 30 years of experience as a software teacher and is an internationally recognized authority on C/C++ programming. He has written eight books on C, C++, and Java programming.
