Visual Basic 6 -- How to Program

by by Deitel Deitel T.R. Nieto — Review by Joe Mizer — jmmizer@juno.com NOCCC - November 23, 1999 at 23:01:24:

If I could have only one book about Visual Basic 6, this would be the one. This book starts at level zero and covers everything needed to be considered a comprehensive book. Included are control structures, error handling, sequential file processing, ActiveX, database management, graphics, event driven programming, object oriented programming and the visual basic language. This book, which is part of the Deitel and Deitel visual programming series, comes with a CD-ROM, which includes Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Working Model. In addition, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, complete code examples for the entire book, and live links to web sites with reference materials for Visual Basic 6.

Deitel and Deitel also sell another version called The Complete Visual Basic 6 Training Course. The difference is that The Complete version has the book text on the CD-ROM, which is searchable,.and has 6 hours of Audio describing Visual Basic concepts and code.

Many of the examples are directly from their C++ How to Program book which is the worlds best selling elementary text. I was able to compare the solutions to the same problem with two languages.

The 178 example programs with over 7800 lines of code are part of what they call the “live code approach.” The samples can run as live code and then be modified to test the effect of different changes. This is a terrific jump-start, which saves a lot of time. The tips given throughout the book include Good Programming Practices, Common programming Errors, Look and Feel Observations, Performance Tips, Portability Tips, Software Engineering Obser-vations, and Testing and Debugging Tips.

The end of each chapter contains a summary and a group of questions and examples. A lot of work was put into making the end of each chapter part of the learning experience and should not be skipped over to quickly.

Published by Prentice Hall, a division of Simon and Schuster ISBN # 0-13-456955-5. Information is available from www.deitel.com and www. prenhall.com. The presentation is geared for the novice and even though it is a long book at just under 1000 pages, it is easy reading
