Nutshell books are quick reference books on programming, system administration, and graphic design at bargain prices. The Nutshell books are generally designed for the experienced user as reference guides, and are affordable. The list price for Visual Basic Controls in a Nutshell (ISBN # 1-56592-294-8) is $24.95. In today’s market where so many books are $50.00 and more this is a bargain. Of course no product is a bargain at any price if it falls short on quality and performance, or you don’t need it. If you are programming in Visual Basic 5 or 6, you need a good reference book which will guide you through the unexpected things that occur when you do not understand all the aspects of a new control.“Controls in Visual Basic” are the basic design components. Broken into eight chapters in two parts. Part 1(Chapters 1-4) is a brief fifty page introduction into controls, control features and forms. Part II is the reference section docu-menting Controls, Properties, Methods, and Events in Chapters 5-8. Each control is covered by first giving a description of its intended use. The individual steps required are covered in order and in detail, and followed by complete examples which work. Hints are given on common “Gotcha’s” which could cost you hours to untangle or just plain ruin your day. An example on how complete the presentations are the section on the Rich-TextBox required 11 pages. The author, Evan S. Dictor, has a very precise and clear style, with descriptions which do not require constantly referring to another text. Another way of using the book is to look up properties, methods and events used by controls. Each property description will cover where it applies and the data type, followed by examples where applicable. The properties section will also tell when it is available. The Codes used are—(RT) runtime, (DT) design time, or (RO) read only, or (RW) read/write.
This book is going to stay close by whenever I am programming in VB. This book is an excellent addition to your library and is easily worth the price. Published by O’Reilly & Associates
