Visual Basic 6 Master Reference

by By Clayton Walnum / Reviewed by Lloyd D Mizer—NOCCC , lmizer@juno.com, - May 19, 2000 at 20:12:40:

This is a reference book, not a tutorial—to get the maximum benefit from this book you will need a basic understanding of Visual Basic. An excellent beginning level, Visual Basic book is Clayton Walnum’s The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Visual Basic 6. After you have mastered the basics, I strongly recommend this book as your main reference guide. The Visual Basic language is so complex that you will need a reference book like this since you are not going to know all of the controls and all of their properties.

This hard-cover book and enclosed CD-ROM is for Beginning to Advanced level programmers. It includes explanations for over 1000 keywords, statements, functions, concepts, objects, controls, associated events, methods, and properties. There are code examples throughout, and many full programs that allow you to see the items in use. It includes everything you need to write logo-compliant Windows 98 applications.

This book contains 1,564 pages, but due to space limitations there are still areas that are not covered. The main areas not covered in this volume are DataGrid, MonthView, MSChart, and WinSock, supplied with some editions of Visual Basic, as well as all events, methods, properties, and objects associated with these additional controls. It does not cover any controls, objects, properties, events, or methods used in Visual Basic database programming. IDG has a new volume “Visual Basic 6, Database Programming” that gives in-depth coverage of Database Programming.

Clayton Walnum is a former executive editor of ANALOG Computing, and the author of more than 30 books on computing related subjects from computer gaming to 3D graphics programming. He has also written hundreds of magazine articles and software reviews. Other books by Clayton include IDG Books Worldwide Windows 98 Programming Secrets, AFC Black Book, Special Edition Using MVC and ATYL, Java By Example, and the award-winning Building Windows 95 Applications with Visual Basic.
