Visual Basic 6 In Record Time is an excellent beginning/Intermediate level book and is subtitled “Teach Yourself the 19 Essential Skills”. It is divided into 19 skills that are designed to teach you specific aspects of the application development process. Each skill was developed to show a particular feature or method through sample applications and routines. You may tackle the skills as they are presented, or study them in any order you choose. It gives an overview of what can be done in a single-user environment. The source code is available free at Sybex’s web site: http://www.sybex.com/.

It will quickly make you proficient in Visual Basic programming. It gives you all you need to start writing complete desktop applications. You will learn the language and the tools that come with Visual Basic. No prior programming experience is needed to benefit from this book. Visual Basic is an excellent environment for developing robust applications quickly. It shows you how to create a professional user interface using the features in Visual Basic.

It is an excellent introduction to Database Programming and Object Oriented Programming. It shows how to build ActiveX controls, create database front ends, and design useful Windows applications. Internet features and ActiveX controls are discussed.

Skill 1 shows how to master the Integrated Development Environment (IDE). There is an introduction to Visual Basic, and features of the IDE. It shows how to customize the IDE. How to use the code window, and using the IDE to manage multiple projects. It then shows how to use the IDE to create an applet.

Skill 8 is an excellent introduction to storing and retrieving data using the features of Visual Basic. It starts out by discussing what ASCII files are and how to read and write them. It discusses what binary, sequential and random access files are and how to read and write them. It addresses what an Access Database is and how to use the data controls to access the database. It shows how to use the Visual Data Manager to create your own database. It demonstrates the use of ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) to manage your newly created database.
