The goal of JAVA in Plain English has always been to summarize the language and its Application Programming Interface (API) so that, despite the book’s small size, you can use it to get a simple, straightforward answer to almost all day-to-day programming questions.

The enhancements in this edition address some of these areas.

Here is a blow-by-blow summary of what you can expect to find in second edition:

Part I A Quick Introduction to Java programming-the new material includes a chapter on common programming techniques and JDBC tutorial.

Part II Java Language Reference-the enhancements in this edition include expanded focus on casting and exception handing.

Part III A plain English Guide to API Topics-this list of tasks serves as a cross-reference to the API Quick Reference.

Part IV Class Summaries-this section briefly describes all the classes, organized by package, so that you can scan it to get a quick overview of the entire API.

Part V API Quick Reference- this is the most important part of book. The enhancement here is the inclusion of examples for most classes in the API, including previously neglected area such as menu, networking, and JDBC.

Part VI Useful Tables- summarizes events, fonts, colors, key codes, and other information.

Part VII Glossary of Java Terminology and Concepts.

There are notes to summarize the important features of a few sections. The examples give written step-by-step explanations instead of presenting the whole programs. This makes easier to follow. This book also uses diagrams to explain the concepts to improve clarity. If you already have C++ knowledge, you will find this book is easier to read. Unique features of this book include the language reference, which highlights JAVA/C++ differences in each topic, making it the most conference for C and C++ programmers.
