Visual Basic 6 In 24 Hours

by By Greg Perry and Sanjaya Hettihewa, Reviewed by Bill DeSmith, NOCCC, desmith@exo.com - October 07, 2000 at 00:26:13:

I really like the Sams series of teach-yourself books. My first venture into doing HTML by hand was to establish a web site and was made possible by one of their books by Laura Lemay. “Visual Basic in 24 Hours” is another winner by the team of Greg Perry and Sanjaya Hettihewa. Both authors have impressive biographies and their competence in both theory and practice shows on every page. Also showing through is the strong Sams Publishing editorial and graphics team.

The book shows a consistent format throughout. This format control is a positive characteristic of all the ‘In 24-Hours’ series. This book uses easily read fonts, defines new terms as they arise, and is not verbose. The book avoids one of my pet peeves by placing diagrams on the same page as the narrative concerning the diagrams.

The book is divided into twenty-four Chapters (surprise!) grouped into seven Sections. The seven sections are:

1. Introducing Visual Basic

2. Coding the Details.

3. Putting Code to Work.

4. Programming with Data.

5. Sprucing up Programs.

6. Advancing Visual Basic Applications and

7. Appendix A- Operator Precedence, Appendix B - Quiz and Exercise answers.

Visual Basic in 24 Hours comes with a CD that supplies Microsoft Visual Basic, Control Creation Edition. This software allows the student to run the exercises but does not serve as a stand-alone compiler (what did you expect to come along with a $19.99 book?).

Visual Basic in 24 Hours is the first book of a seven book series: Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours, More Visual Basic in 21 Days, Visual Basic 6 Unleashed, Doing Objects in Visual Basic 6, Object Oriented Programming with Visual Basic 6 in 21 Days, Database Programming with Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours, and Database Programming with Visual Basic in 21 Days.
