The cover of Online Auctions @ eBay proclaims that the book is “the unofficial expert guide to eBay.” It certainly lives up to that billing. Online Auctions @ eBay covers many things that The Official eBay Guide doesn’t even mention. Just what are those unmentionables? Well, among other things, Online Auctions @ eBay includes an entire chapter on a controversial practice called “sniping.” Simply put, sniping is the act of placing a winning bid in the final seconds of an auction. Needless to say, snipers are not well-liked by other bidders. Sellers tend to hold the opposite viewpoint.I put Dennis Prince’s sniping tips to the test at the end of a music CD auction, but I didn’t win. But that was okay, because the auction price had risen above the amount I was willing to pay.
That brings up another point raised in a later chapter: It is easy to get caught up in bidding fever and end up paying too much. I’ve done it and you probably will too. The lesson to be learned is simple: keep your budget in mind at all times. Sellers will also find a lot of “insider” tips in this book. For example, you’ll be interested to know that there is a best time of the week to start your auction.
And if you’re a serious year-round eBay auctioneer, you’ll find the advice on prime selling seasons to be worth the price of the book.
