Hear-Say Voice E-mail Recorder

by By Alan Lynn—NOCCC , Edbytes@Aol.com - May 19, 2000 at 18:58:14:

The sound of a familiar voice, a child’s first words, nothing can describe these. Hear-Say by Voice Pilot makes it easy to put sound into an e-mail.

The program installs easily and it is easy to use. There is a recorder to let you record your own words, it lets you edit and adjust until you have it just right.

Next problem, sound files can get very large very quickly. A thirty second wav file (Windows audio) is over 500 kilobytes, no problem. Hear-Say has three levels of compression, low compression is 16:1. That 500 Kb file is now about 40 Kb and it sounds as good as the original. The medium compression is 32:1, at this level the voice sounds a little muffled but absolutely recognizable, better than some phone connections and only about 20 Kb in size. The third level is archive quality, the words are distinct but definitely changed. How would you feel at 125:1 compression; at about 4 Kb you can dictate a huge amount and take up very little space.

You can compress as you record or make a wav file and compress later. You can compress any wav file. Wav files can be played by the Windows media player but the vcd (compressed files) need a special player. When you prepare your file for e-mail, The Hear-Say Bar (260 Kb) is included and is made to be sent with your file as an attachment the first time you send a recording to someone. The only problem I have encountered is not with Hear-Say, but with my e-mail. I had to compress the player to keep AOL from timing out

While Hear-Say is great for e-mail, why stop there. You can embed sound files into word processing documents. A school report that includes sound, either voice or music could be great. Let your imagination take over.

You need:

• A Pentium class computer, 100 Mhz or better.

• 12 Mb of RAM or more.

• 5 Mb of free hard disk space.

• Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0.

• 8 or 16 bit soundcard or better.

• Microphone.

Hear-Say is made by Voice Pilot Technologies Inc. 12515 Kendall Drive, Suite 200. Miami, Florida 33186. They can be reached at Phone 1.800.VOICEPILOT, Fax at 1.305.598.8129, e-mail info@voicepilot.com.

Hear-Say is available in computer stores for about $30 dollars. I enjoy using this program.
