Many parents have children who are using the Internet at school and at home. A California survey conducted in the fall of 97 found that eighty-eight percent of parents polled said they monitored their children’s use of the Internet, and seventy percent said they could use some help in screening content. The Learning Company has created its most popular Internet filtering software, Cyber Patrol, for retail sale in stores nationwide. Cyber Patrol, which is also available for purchase through the Internet and via telephone, sells for an average street price of $39.95.The Learning Company reports—”The Cyber Patrol 4.0 that parents will find on store shelves provides them with a list of inappropriate sites created by a team of researchers comprised of parents and teachers. This list is updated daily, assuring even greater protection in a Web environment that changes daily. A variety of technical improvements provides more precision in screening of content, increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the software and allows Cyber Patrol’s list of more than 50,000 inappropriate sites to be downloaded in under thirty seconds.
The program also offers a unique ChatGard feature that helps prevent children from inadvertently divulging personal information, such as age, address, phone number or school name, to strangers through Web sites and online chatrooms. With Cyber Patrol, adults can add or delete sites based on their beliefs and judgment, so that content blocked for a 7-year-old can remain available to a 15-year-old. The software also manages access to chatrooms and controls the time a child spends online. The retail version of Cyber Patrol includes 12 free months of daily downloadable updates to the CyberNOTlist. Additional 12 month subscriptions can be purchased for $29.95.
