Free Office Suite

StarOffice 5.2 is now available for download from Sun but unless you have a cable modem or ADSL I don’t recommend you download it because it is huge (up to 109MB, depending on language and platform). You can buy a “Deluxe” version on on CD for $40 and have it mailed to you.

Sun’s “Star Office Suite” is a well-developed, smooth-running, good-looking and nicely integrated package comprising a word processor and Web-page editor, spreadsheet, database, calendar and scheduler, presentation maker, drawing and graphics tools, an E-mail client, newsgroup reader, and a browser.

The Windows version requires:

PC with Pentium CPU Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 Recommended 64-Mbytes RAM (Minimum 32-Mbytes) 110-Mbytes free hard disk space (170-Mbytes for full installation) CD-ROM drive VGA or higher resolution graphic device with at least 256 colors (800x600)

There are also versions for Linux and Solaris (SPARC[tm]).
