Sunday January 6, 2008
NOCCC
Electronic Waste Collection Day

The use and abuse of personal computers has created a tremendous problem. How is computer equipment to be properly disposed so that the hazardous substances (such as lead, nickel, mercury, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, and zinc) do not contaminate the environment?
NOCCC has the solution!
For one day, we will give members an opportunity to safely recycle their useless equipment.
Products may include televisions, monitors (CRT, LCD, and plasma), laptop computers, PDAs, VCRs, printers, cell phones, desktop computers, calculators, and audio-video equipment. Each item must be in a safe to handle condition (no broken glass, no foreign toxic chemicals, no dangerous condition).
Bring these items to the Sunday meeting (from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.). Go to the Chapman University Hashinger Science Center parking lot.
Not all items are acceptable. Talk to the NOCCC volunteers about what items will be taken. Do not leave any items in the parking lot unless instructed to do so.
NOCCC reserves the right to refuse any and all items.

General Meeting

Main Meeting (2:00 p.m. in Irvine Auditorium)

Usenet (user network)
Usenet isn't for everyone's taste. However, many people become devoted users. For these people, usenet is as important as email and surfing the World Wide Web.

Usenet (derived from user network) was first developed in 1979. It is a messaging system that allows users to post articles (or posts) that can be read publically (i.e. - by anyone). Categories of these posts are called newsgroups (and sub-topics divided into subjects), hence the association of usenet with newsgroups.

Unlike latter day web-based forums, usenet is decentrallized (no single or primary central server) because of the early lack of dependability to find usenet servers that were currently active. Your articles are posted on your host's usenet server which in turn propagated the articles to other servers. In otherwords, In the past, messages were distributed across the Internet on a limited schedule (perhaps once a day). Today, the messages are distributed between servers much more quickly.

In addition to text messages, newsgroups are often devoted to binary file types such as images, movies, executable files, etc. In fact, as measured by size, it is suggested that over 99 percent of usenet traffic is binary attachments.

We'll examine usenet clients (such as Forte Inc's (www.forteinc.com) Agent, NewsBIN Pro (www.newsbin.com), Microsoft Outlook, and Google's Groups (groups.google.com)) that make usenet easy to use.
