NOCCC
Electronic Waste Collection Day

The use and abuse of personal computers has created a tremendous problem. How is computer equipment to be properly disposed so that the hazardous substances (such as lead, nickel, mercury, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, and zinc) do not contaminate the environment?
NOCCC has the solution!
For one day, we will give members an opportunity to safely recycle their useless equipment.
Products may include televisions, monitors (CRT, LCD, and plasma), laptop computers, PDAs, VCRs, printers, cell phones, desktop computers, calculators, and audio-video equipment. Each item must be in a safe to handle condition (no broken glass, no foreign toxic chemicals, no dangerous condition).
Bring these items to the Sunday meeting (from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.). Go to the Chapman University Hashinger Science Center parking lot.
Not all items are acceptable. Talk to the NOCCC volunteers about what items will be taken. Do not leave any items in the parking lot unless instructed to do so.
NOCCC reserves the right to refuse any and all items.

Hardware Essentials (Science 109)
Light Emitting Diode (LED) Technology

In a few short years, incandescent light bulbs will be illegal (at least the common ones). CFLs (compact fluorescent light) contain mercury and are hazardous waste.

One possible replacement will be LEDs. They have been used as indicator lights for decades. Recently, they have appeared in everything from Christmas lights, back-lighting for video displays, flashlights, etc. These solid state devices are highly efficient, but they have their short-comings, too. We’ll take a look at how they work, what uses they are good for, and what the future holds.

Just keep in mind that an LED’s watts are as meaningless as a microprocessor’s gigahertz. Except by using extremely expensive equipment, it very difficult to compare the light output of dissimilar flashlights, for example.

There have been many advancements in recent years. Most have to do with increased efficiency, but there are a few innovations that will surprise you.
